St. Anthony Chapel, Chemor

Our History

Before the Chapel of St. Anthony was built in 1964, the Catholics of Chemor used to have Masses celebrated at the last shop along the main road, Jalan Kuala Kangsar in Chemor. In 1964, a priest from China, Fr. Peter Chiang bought a piece of land in Chemor and built the chapel. It was named after St. Anthony. Fr. Peter Chiang was transferred back to China a few years later. From 1970 to 1979, Fr. Matthias Ki, a priest from St. Michael’s Church, Ipoh came to St. Anthony’s Chapel to celebrate Mass every Sunday. Even after Fr. Matthias Ki had been transferred to Taiping, he still continued to serve the Catholics in Chemor. Fr. Matthias Ki was succeeded by Fr.Francis Chao who served from 1979 to 1984. From mid-1984 no priest came to Chemor to celebrate Mass and so the chapel was closed for four years. In 1988, the Chemor Catholics asked the priest from St. John the Baptist Church, Sungai Siput, to celebrate Mass for them every Sunday. Simultaneously the Canossian Sisters from Sungai Siput went to teach catechism to the children. Fr. Maiccal Sinnappan from Kuala Kangsar came to celebrate Mass in English three or four times while Fr. Stephen Liew from College General, Penang came to celebrate Mass once a month in Mandrain.

From 1991 – 1995 Fr. Maurice Surmon from Kuala Kangsar and Fr. Arthur Julien from Sitiawan came to celebrate Mass in English, three or four times and once in a month in Mandarin respectively. From October 1996 – April 2002, Fr. Robin Andrews from Kuala Kangsar came to celebrate Mass weekly. Whenever Fr. Robin Andrews was unable to do so, Fr. Charles Chin or Fr. Maurice Surmon would replace him. From 2002 – 2003 Fr. David Lourdes from Kuala Kangsar or Fr. Maurice Surmon from Ipoh Garden or Fr. Michael Dass from Silibin, Ipoh came to celebrate Mass every Sunday. In 2004, Fr. Edmund Woon and Fr. Marshall Fernandez from St. Michael’s Church, Ipoh celebrated Mass on the second and fourth Sunday of the month in Mandarin and English respectively. Communion services were conducted in the absence of the priests. Since 27 Feb 2005, Fr. Anthony Pillai from the John the Baptist Church Sungai Siput served as an administrator of St. Anthony’s chapel, Chemor. Fr. Michael Dass succeeded Fr. Anthony Pillai as the new administrator from 2010.
